Sleeping after yesterday
Sleeping at home in the dark after yesterday's bodega recognition and the threat text on the prepaid. Phone face-down on the nightstand. Chain lock on the front door checked twice before bed.

Eyes open, not yet
Waking before the alarm. Lying still on her back with one hand resting on the prepaid. Staring at the ceiling. The apartment is quiet and the light through the blinds is the first gray of the morning.

Hostess pushed to Friday
Making coffee in the kitchen and reading the 7 AM text from the Park Avenue hostess pushing Wednesday's appointment to Friday. Both hands wrapped around the mug. She is already thinking about Gladys Pereira and the six hundred dollars.

The husband sent a photo
Standing at the kitchen counter when the prepaid buzzes at 8:30. The photograph loads. Her face bent over the pin cushion from last Saturday, neck exposed, the camera angled low. She screenshots with hands that are steady and slow. She does not reply.

Hands flat on counter
Still at the kitchen counter. Both palms flat on the surface. The phone is face-up beside the cold coffee. She is not drinking the coffee. She is looking at the wall behind the sink and not seeing it.

Six minutes at the table
The prepaid buzzes again at 10. The message reads, 'this is what my wife sees when I send her proof of the work being done.' She pulls out the kitchen chair and sits down. She does not move for six minutes.

Envelope and brass key
Still at the kitchen table. Pulling the manila envelope closer with one finger. Looking at the brass key under the lamp. Deciding she needs to leave the apartment for a while. The laundry has to get done.

Man in black, Nostrand
Walking south on Nostrand toward the laundromat. The man in the black coat is on the corner with a camera. A neighbor she has never met asks, in front of two customers going into the corner store, 'is he with you?' She says, 'no,' and keeps walking with her bag of clothes tighter against her hip.
