The Threat at My Door

My old mistake did not arrive alone. Mohan used it as a weapon, and I hated how quickly fear made the room agree with him. I stayed still because every interruption would have sounded defensive. I have seen careful people build lies from one uncertain fact. The cruelest part is that I cannot dismiss the accusation; I can only examine it.

I kept the written timeline in my hand instead of my phone. Paper felt less temporary. Meera needs facts she can carry into a crowded room, not my wounded pride. I wanted her to believe me because I am usually right, and that is exactly the kind of reasoning I should distrust.

Faisal's photograph of my flat door made the danger personal in a stupidly ordinary way. Someone walked there, touched the paint, and decided fear would work better than force. I keep thinking about the protected witness and what happens when frightened people are asked to choose between safety and truth. I hope I have not already used up the trust I had.

I will call the hotel meeting again. Not to demand belief, but to keep everyone inside the room where contradictions can be heard. If they scatter, the story gets to control the facts.

At home I checked the door and window like an amateur. The threat worked. I checked twice anyway. I copied the timeline and saved the restored footage, and still felt as if the missing piece could be sitting in plain sight.
