The Clearance I Cannot Bury
My shoulder is still complaining, but the part that unsettles me is not the impact. It is that Faisal wanted the envelope badly enough to turn fear into violence in front of everyone. I kept recording. Good. I hate that I was proud of that before I checked whether my hands were steady.
The certificate number, the hotel payment, the courier order—once they were spoken aloud in one chain, the case felt less like a mystery and more like a mess I helped arrange. I have caught liars before. Sometimes I wonder whether catching them is just a respectable way of ruining them.
Meera looked at the evidence as if it might divide her family into innocent people and fools. I wanted to tell her that people are rarely divided so cleanly. Still, I could not blame her for asking how much of her trust had been false. I have asked myself the same about the old clearance.
I left Mohan's accusation sealed. I know exactly where the folder is. That is the problem. Keeping it closed lets me imagine I am protecting the handover, when really I am postponing the answer my mother will ask for.
I called her and said I would answer personally for the clearance I got wrong. My voice was steady enough to sound calm. Privately, I felt relieved that she did not immediately forgive me. Forgiveness would have been too easy to carry.
