the tribeca one
The doorman wanted me to know everybody was watching. He said it like a weather report — the other one left in a hurry, everybody in this neighborhood got a key last month, including you — loud enough for the folding table to hear. I wanted to evaporate on that sidewalk and I didn't, which is the only thing I did right today for nineteen minutes standing across from a building I have no business knowing the shape of.
She called me the tribeca one. Not my name. A location. But then she put coffee in front of me like I was owed it, and I do not know what to do with that. Being known by a stranger as the person who shows up. Being fed because I looked like I hadn't eaten. Both are things I do for clients. Nobody does them for me. I stood there and drank it and felt like a house pet.
Forty-seven. I am forty-seven pending a watch investigation and one bad week from suspension, and I spent nineteen minutes on a Flatbush sidewalk while my career aged in dog years. Camille's thread — I typed two words and they were the wrong two and I sent them anyway because I needed someone in the world to have heard me say it. Three days of nothing from me and I come back with she was real like that is a status report and not a confession.
I called Denise and did not mention any of it. She talked about Robin's new job and I said mm-hmm and meant none of it and that is also a kind of theft.
The envelope is still behind the jackets. Medal or drink. I will take the medal.
