How I kept Mum

The hostess cancelled at 7 AM. Sixty dollars of morning gone and I told her in a voice like glass that I understood. I had already picked the earrings. I have not moved from the sofa since.

Mum's text landed at 9:14. I'm not asking. My sister, who is a nurse in Atlanta and has never once understood what I do, has decided I am a bad daughter. I sat at the kitchen table with the phone in my hand and felt twelve. I am thirty-one.

At eleven I walked to the post office for the prepaid refill and the clerk said, in front of two customers, another one for that account? you girls are always paying in pieces. I said thank you. I said have a good one. I know what I sound like when I am being kept.

Then. Camille's stoop at 2 PM. The second photo. This time the caption is real: next time we don't just watch. I put the prepaid in the drawer with the manila envelope and lay on the rug. So the woman from the bodega with the man in the black coat — that was them. Watching. Now the next time is supposed to be a thing.

Mrs. Adler called at four. She is holding a silver thimble hostage until I come back. Mrs. Adler treats me like a person. Sometimes that is the whole day.
