I Did Not Press Send
I got the name. That is the whole day. The rest is just where I put my body while I held it.
This morning, back bedroom, seventh appointment. Jolene holding a hem, saying it like weather: Hollis. The Kips Bay one. His name is on the lease here. And my face. I know the face. The closed eyes, the open mouth. The woman holding her only card. I did not apologize for it. I pinned the hem.
Jolene doesn't know what she handed me. Let her think I had a brain fart about a name.
The husband walked me out. Phone low against the wall, shoulder into mine. The kind of contact that could be a hallway thing or could be something else. I did not flinch because flinching is a receipt. But my body logged it. He is on a list now that lives only in me.
Elevator. A woman I styled in June for a Hamptons wedding. She said it like remembering me was a favor. Williams. You did my sister's wedding. I rode down without answering. She will go home tonight and tell her kitchen she saw the stylist and my name will enter a room I have spent the whole summer trying not to be known in. The Mrs. Adler circle and the fourth floor are getting close in a way I did not plan.
