What They Reduced Me To
The ugliest part was hearing them say “payout” like I had planted a story for money. I did not save Claire Donovan to become another case in somebody’s gossip. I saved her because the truth was there and because I could not stomach walking away once I knew what had been done around Destiny.
Still, I counted the cancelled meetings over breakfast. Three names gone in one morning felt like proof that my reputation was rented, not owned. Every referral I ever earned depended on people believing I was discreet, competent, and difficult to buy. The article made me look dramatic. The restraining order made me look dangerous. Neither label leaves room for the version of me that stayed awake checking documents and protected a girl who cannot afford to be protected twice.
I keep touching my wrist out of habit. The bruise is fading, but my anger has not. I am ashamed of how much I want to make the Hargroves feel the consequences of trying to erase me. I want the truth to cost them more than it has cost me. I want every person who heard my name attached to a lawsuit to hear it again after the case is closed and decide I was worth believing.
And I checked Maya’s name again. Not because I expected it to appear. Because silence from the people I trust feels louder than accusation.
