A Deadline I Did Not Agree To

The sister thing. That's what did it.

I never mentioned Atlanta. I never mentioned a sister. I had a whole fitting in Tribeca today — $2,400 return client, expensive wool, trousers you have to talk into behaving — and somewhere in the middle of pinning a cuff this woman says "is your sister visiting from Atlanta" like she was asking the time. My neck went cold. Not my hands. My neck. Like someone walked up behind me and I didn't hear the door.

How does she know. Who told her. The bearded man left for ninety minutes. I timed it. Ninety minutes is not a bathroom break. Ninety minutes is a phone call in a stairwell someone is paying him to have.

I took the envelope. I took the brass key on the red fob. I took the yellow post-it dated a week from Friday. I didn't look at him. I didn't look at any of them until the cab. Now I have a deadline I didn't agree to.

The drawer is becoming a collection. Yesterday's brass key, today's envelope, today's brass key, the post-it. I am becoming a person with a drawer.

I cried in the bathroom. First time this month. I sat on the edge of the tub with the envelope still in my hand like something I needed to hold while I did it. Faucet off. Not loud. I just needed to cry and the envelope was what I was holding.

The convex mirror in the lobby saw me leave with the envelope pressed flat to the small of my back. I know because I know where cameras are. I held it against me anyway. That is the part that scares me. Not that they saw. That I let them see. That I have decided this is happening.

Jolene read the post. I know because she hasn't texted me about it. Robin said I look like I've seen a ghost. I have. She is still carrying my bag.

A week from Friday. I am not going. I am going. I am not opening the envelope until then. I am opening it tonight. I am not opening it tonight.

The kitchen light is on across the room. I am in the sleep slip. The drawer is shut. The ranking follows me home.
