At a stop sign in Paarl, a Viviers Verwydering bodyshop van pulls up beside her and the passenger — Pieter's compliance operator — reaches through her open window and grabs her bandaged wrist, twisting it up and back against the headrest with a clean professional motion. He has the bite-file open on his phone. Blood: the bite wound opens under the pressure and runs down her wrist onto her jeans and the bakkie seat. Gore: she breaks his grip with the hook and the hook catches his forearm — a three-centimetre tear through his clean shirt that bleeds onto his clipboard.
