I make last wishes happen for dying people. A hospice nurse in Cape Town sent me to Ruth Madondo, because she knew I would not turn away.
Ruth asked me to bring her lost granddaughter Nia inside before noon on Nov 28. She had 27 days when she paid me.
My mother called while Ruth was telling me why Nia matters. I watched the phone ring, but I did not answer. I chose the promise first.
I took Ruth's money and gave her my word. I told her I would not drag Nia inside. Nia had to choose to come.
At the locked gate, I told Ruth's uncle Gideon the truth. He said Ruth could ask Nia later. His workers watched him block me.
Then Gideon backed me against my truck and put a hand around my waist. I pushed free before he could close the distance.
I fell and cracked my camera, but Mpho saw Gideon cross the line. Her night keys gave me one thing to watch. Next, I would speak to Nia.
