The Khayelitsha call came in through a wrong number that turned out to be right twice — the homeowner panicked when she stepped over the threshold and grabbed her jacket sleeve with both hands and yanked her bodily back into the room the Cape cobra was in, slamming her shoulder into the doorframe and twisting her wrist under his grip. She heard the bag clip snap on her belt, heard the cobra's tail whip against the wall, and she could not get her hook up because the man's hand was still on her wrist. She got the hook up on the second try and the bag over the cobra's head on the third. She stepped out onto the street with a stripe of cape cobra spit drying along her left cheekbone — cytotoxin red, the colour of a slapped lip — and a wrist already bruised across the ulna into a cuff of purple. Her phone was dead, she walked four blocks to a spaza shop and bought a charger and did not turn it on for eleven minutes.
