Day two and she wakes with the wardrobe still against the door. She moves through the house in daylight checking every room — the servants' quarters, the study, the bathroom with its ceiling hatch. At 11 p.m. she is walking the dark passage with the kitchen knife when a hand comes out of the wall gap and grabs her wrist hard enough to drive the nail through her palm. She tears free and runs. In the morning her wrist is bruised and her palm is bleeding and the wound is exactly the right depth to need cleaning but not stitches. She drives to the ridge. She does not send a case update. She sends: You said I could reach you. Is that still true?
