A Stellenbosch wine estate needs a weekend house-sitter — the owner, Anya Vorster, is flying to Johannesburg for a wedding. Daria takes it because the ridge signal in the Karoo is not reliable enough and because the Boerboels will survive two days on automatic water. She drives south through the scrub and the sky and arrives at a glass-walled tasting room with her mother's call waiting. Forty-two thousand rands by end of October. She has nineteen thousand saved. Anya's house is clean and bright and the guest room has curtains and a lock on the door and Daria stands under the shower for a long time.
