The thing I didn't stop

The ute smells like takeaway grease and cold air. Counter meal at the Southport pub, two minutes of chewing, then the records. I keep the receipt because it says I was here, I was eating, I was a person doing a normal thing.

The depot footage is grainy as hell. I watched Dwayne shake the driver's hand. That was the whole transaction. A handshake and a redirect and the warehouse is empty. That's all it takes. Point someone at a door and they open it and you can pretend you didn't know.

I think about Caleb's face when he realised I saw the message on Kerr's screen. Not guilty. Relieved. Like he'd been holding something heavy and dropped it on my foot on purpose. I should be angry about that but I'm not. I understand wanting someone else to hold it.

The shoulder twinged when I shifted in the seat. Ice pack again. Still not thinking about the footage from yesterday.

There was a version of this where I moved faster. Where the door didn't open. I have replayed that version so many times it has its own colour. It is not this one.
