The Card Beneath the Card
I found the copied blue card inside the white one, and the first thought in my head was not who had done it. It was how badly I had missed it. That is the part I hate. I am paid to notice the wrong face, the false badge, the hand reaching too quickly. I looked at a card and saw only what Noah had handed me.
When the fake guard moved, my body knew before I did. For half a second, everything became clean: his reach, the doors, the founder behind me, the room full of people who had no idea what I had seen. Then the moment passed, and I was just a man blocking a lift while cameras kept recording my back.
Noah says he does not know the guard who reacted to the card. I believe him about most things. That is precisely why his denial worries me. If he does not know, someone wanted him blamed, or somebody is carrying a face and a story we have not identified yet. Either way, the uncertainty sits beside me now.
The copied card is under my phone. I keep checking that it is still there, as if touching it can tell me whose fingerprints I failed to notice. Yesterday I thought about manufacturing danger to see who would answer. Today I dislike how easily danger found a way in without me. I wanted to test my own usefulness. Instead, the day tested whether I am still sharp enough to earn the place I have taken beside the founder’s door.
