The Nails Kept Holding

I keep thinking about the space between the pallet and my body. Inches. That is such a stupidly small number for a life to survive by. I was frightened, but I was more frightened of how quickly the fear turned back into work. Photograph the door. Check the plate. Save the docket. Do not stand under anything heavy and call it bravery.

The meal went cold beside me because once I started matching the measurements, hunger became an interruption. The numbers did not merely look written by the same hand. They felt like someone had left a private instruction in plain sight, waiting for me to be stubborn enough to notice. I am proud of that noticing. I am also ashamed of how much I want it to mean something.

I promised not to chase the file alone. The promise sits badly because I have made practical promises before and then treated them like loose change. I do not want to be the man who survives every dangerous mistake by being too clever to learn anything.

My shoulder felt good after the shower. For ten minutes, I was not carrying the whole record in my teeth. Then I put the photographs where I could see them, and the calm went straight back to work.
