The Drawer Stays Shut
The drawer stayed shut.
I stood there. Phone in one hand. Envelope in the other. I put it away a whole month ago. I can see the names right through the paper. I know what it says. I know what I signed.
I should have called Lou. I should have called Reyes. My thumb was right there. I can hit a bag for two hours. I can run when my ribs hurt. But I can't press one small button.
I don't know why. I really don't. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week. Maybe never.
I didn't even eat. The receipt is still on the counter from this morning. I just stood there. Then I went to bed.
Drawer closed. Nothing called. Another night done.
