Day

September 20th, 2026

THEREFORE from Day 19's Tupperware, Ollie worked the Saturday shift at the bookshop on Lamb's Conduit Street, restocking the back room, when his phone buzzed on the stack of invoices — Yara, a longer text than the one at the showcase.

What happened

THEREFORE from Day 19's Tupperware, Ollie worked the Saturday shift at the bookshop on Lamb's Conduit Street, restocking the back room, when his phone buzzed on the stack of invoices — Yara, a longer text than the one at the showcase. She had heard about the set from someone at the Beehive, she wrote, and the kitchen in the bit was hers, and she needed him to either not do it again or change it so it was not hers. He sat on the back room floor with his back against the radiator and his face did something Miriam, had she walked in, would not have been allowed to see. He typed two replies and deleted both. At the counter a regular he had never spoken to — a man in his forties with a paper bag — handed him a flyer for a Sunday open mic in Crouch End and said you've got a face for this, and the small romance of being seen by a stranger sat beside the larger humiliation of being claimed. He walked home with the Crouch End flyer in his pocket and decided, by the time he reached Tufnell Park, that he would reply to Yara tomorrow, and that he would not change the bit.
