   After a rival starts chasing a planted survey lead, treasure hunter Oliver Brennan tests whether a client's recovered payroll chest was marked by the same unknown planner.

   I'm a London treasure hunter, and clients hire me by referral when a family needs proof or a sealed room may hold something lost. Nia Moss, a bricklayer working there, slipped me a waterproof lead.

   I took the lead to a cafe because the rain was hammering London. Mara Venn, a rival salvage captain, walked in with three hired crew and demanded it.

   Mara said someone paid her to make me follow the clue. I saw the old foreman's copied mark and knew it was bait built around my undeclared find.

   My question was simple: was solicitor Maya Harcourt's missing payroll chest another step back to Kingsmere? Maya hired me to prove her grandfather's chest was inside a dead lift shaft.

   I found the brass chest wedged behind the counterweight housing. Mara's worker photographed my van before I could carry it upstairs.

   Then he called me Scaffold Boy in front of Maya's clerks. I was muddy, embarrassed, and carrying a century-old payroll record with somebody else's trap inside it.

   Inside was fresh red waterproof paper with the same upside-down depth mark. That proved Maya's job had been marked by the same planner, so I kept the strip.

   I left the chest with Maya and put the strip with my tools. The next time I found a client's record, I checked what was fixed behind it.

   Paper Behind Stone

   Treasure hunter Oliver Brennan must prove a London pub's hidden deed is genuine before rival salvage captain Mara Venn can use a sale to take it.

   Reza Malik, a London publican, hired me to find the Crown and Bell's deed before he sold the building. My question was whether I could prove the old paper was genuine before Mara stopped me.

   I found the deed behind a flour chute in the cellar wall. Reza had hidden it there during a threatened sale, because the pub was all his late father had kept alive.

   Then Mara Venn, a rival salvage captain, arrived with papers claiming an investor had already bought the building. She stood in the cellar and read the sale terms aloud.

   My face must have gone funny, mate. One loud purchase clause and Mara had made a recovered deed look like worthless old paper.

   Reza called a solicitor. She checked the seal and dates and confirmed the deed came before Mara's sale, so the pub stayed with Reza.

   Reza held it up for his neighbours' phones while Mara watched. Under the deed, I found a charcoal rubbing of the copied claim mark, so the next clean lead pointed below Kingsmere.

   The rubbing sent me after contractor access records, so I went to a storage unit to check which council cameras Venn had bought. Mara Venn, a rival salvage captain, was waiting alone.

   Mara backed me against it and kept one gloved hand at my collar. She didn't squeeze, but she made sure I understood the offer.

   She said I could stand beside her crew at the reservoir inspection if I handed over the hidden chamber. She gave me one long look that was not about access paperwork.

   I nearly said yes. Then I saw a camera lens reflected behind Mara. The empty shelves had been arranged to record whatever happened next, and mate, that ruins the mood.

   I refused the deal and left with a replacement-camera serial under my thumb. The serial proved Venn's access purchase could be checked at the public inspection.

   Then Nia Moss, a bricklayer, found a fresh shaft slab with Scout, a cream-coloured spaniel. At dawn, I went down before Mara could reach it.

   Ten Seconds Behind

   Treasure hunter Oliver Brennan must reach a flooding reservoir chamber, move its wartime bullion and escape before rival salvage captain Mara Venn controls the site.

   Nia Moss, a bricklayer, had found the builders' slab, so I went down before Mara's crew. I needed to reach the reservoir chamber and move the bullion before Mara controlled it.

   The shaft was worse than the map. A rotten rung caught my numb shoulder, and the drop below had turned into black water.

   I reached the vault and found corroded wartime bullion cases on a raised shelf. Water was already forcing through a split wall and lifting loose brick.

   Mara Venn, a rival salvage captain, came through the opposite inspection hatch 10 seconds later. She had found the false route without losing a minute.

   Mara offered me one final buyout and said the public inspection could clear my name. I checked the rising water and knew her timing was part of the trap.

   I split the cases between two dry bags and dragged them toward a dry service duct. The shelf buckled as a wave hit it, which is rich considering I needed it still standing.

   One casing split and gave me a small claim plate with the old foreman's exact split-notch, hook and upside-down mark. I had moved the bullion and kept the plate.

   I hid the cases inside the duct and left before Mara could control me. On 15 October, the public drawdown brings every camera down there, so I'm carrying evidence, not gold.

   The Serial Betrayal

   After recovering a brooch for a theatre costume supervisor, Oliver learns that she gave Mara Venn the serial evidence he needed for the reservoir inspection.

   I found Elspeth Rook's missing brooch in the Crown Theatre lift gear. Then she sent my camera evidence to her building manager, and he passed it straight to Mara Venn.

   Elspeth, the costume supervisor who hired me, admitted the trade on the phone. Mara Venn used it to film me claiming I staged evidence at the reservoir.

   So I left the brooch recorded and kept the gold exactly where it was. If I move it now, she owns the story. Next, I take these permits into public view.
