What happened

On September 7, Maa calls again and this time the warmth is louder — Maa says Appa is doing better, that Im came by the Ansan house on Sunday and Appa talked to her for two hours about his shoulder surgery. Maa does not mention Seo-yeon at all. Seo-yeon is slicing radish for dinner when her thumb slips and the blood blooms red across the white cutting board; she photographs it without thinking because red on white has become her eye. She realizes the galbi-jjim recipe Im used is on a card that lives only in Maa's kitchen drawer — Im has been inside her mother's house. She decides not to call Maa again until she has the badge photo and lock of hair in hand.
