Successful exits and trusted people

Ben's date chose the bus and I called it a win because that's what I do — I make the exit sound like a feature. She didn't want to stay. That's the data. I logged it, told Ben he did great, bought him a pint, went home. But I was on that rooftop for four hours watching a man try to be someone he thought a stranger would like, and the whole time I was thinking about who inside my operation just handed a stranger Ben's workplace.

Leena said trusted referral administrator. That phrase is doing a lot of work. Trusted. By me. By the people whose files I actually care about keeping safe. Someone I vetted, someone who passed the vibe check, walked into a room and said the thing that connects a nervous bankruptcy adviser to a charity drinks crowd. Not a hack, not some rival — a colleague. Someone who sat in the same kind of meetings I sit in. That's the part I can't put down.

Nathaniel's producer sent an unedited minute. One minute of me talking Ben through a breathing exercise and suddenly it's evidence of a confidence system. Like the name makes it sinister. Like saying you've got this to someone who needs to hear it is architecture. Architect. Someone called me that last night. Not my name. Something that fits like a glove I didn't know I'd left lying around. A door photo and a nickname. Someone close enough to know the shape of me.
