Fraud Is a Strong Word
Fraud is a strong word for a man who confused technical evidence with a personality. Still, I felt it land, and that is the part I hate: the cameras made the accusation public before I could make the correction plain.
I kept rereading the old promoter’s words on the Tube, looking for the exact place where shame slipped in. He recognised my voice and decided that voice equalled guilt. Easy, really. If you control the montage, you control which parts of me strangers meet first.
I asked Leena to record it. That was not panic. That was me being quietly competent while everyone else treated my face as evidence. She had the timestamp ready, too. Annoying how often competence looks like being prepared for someone else’s mess.
Ruby’s debrief mattered more than I expected. I withdrew before the kiss because I was supposed to help her, not collect a moment. There was no noble speech for leaving. I just felt the joke in it: the man everyone called a fraud listening for the right cue.
The panic is quieter now, but it has not left. It sits beside the question I keep circling: how many times do I need to prove I was there before I can stop pretending presence means nothing?
