The Coat Hanging in Plain Sight
The coat photograph made me angrier than the threat against Kwon Min’s brother. A visa is a fact someone can uncover. A closed officetel door is different; it changes the meaning of home.
I kept studying the image as though distance might tell me when it was taken or what else Im could see from that angle. I hate that she chose the most ordinary object in my life as proof. I hate even more that the thought of her wearing my perfume made my own skin feel borrowed.
Kwon Min signed with a steadier hand than mine would have. If he had refused, I would have smiled politely and quietly placed him below everyone I can trust. He did not refuse. Tonight I ranked him first among the people who have not disappointed me, though first place feels ugly when it comes from fear.
At home, I checked the lock twice and the fairy-light timer once. I wanted the room to accuse itself. It gave me nothing; the same soft glow, the same obedient walls, as if they had agreed to forget.
I almost called my mother because hearing my name would make the apartment feel occupied again. I did not. She would want certainty, and I have only a photograph, three texts, and Kwon Min’s memory of perfume.
