The Spoon Was Right
I heard my own name today in a throat that was not mine.
I keep starting with the smaller thing. The smaller thing is: a guest at the concierge used my name and I was standing ten feet away and she did not see me. The smaller thing is: I wore my nicest press on purpose and still felt underdressed in my own lobby. The smaller thing is that Im is good at the recommendation voice. None of these are the thing.
The thing is that Im said Welcome back, Seo-yeon-ssi, and the breath at the end was mine. I have lived in that breath for thirty-one years. She served it back to me like change from a transaction I did not make. And then the real thing, the one I keep circling: Maa called, bright-voiced, the way she only sounds when Appa has landed somewhere kind. Appa believes it now. The egg roll was right. The spoon was right. Some woman sat in my mother's kitchen and learned my father's standard for a properly folded egg roll and a spoon held a certain way, and it worked on the first try, and now my father is gone from me inside his own home. I stood by the service elevator and let Maa tell me twice. I did not trust the first time.
I made two decisions in that corridor and I felt, for the first time today, awake. One: I push for the televised preliminary hearing. I want my face in every living room before Im gets another week of rehearsal. Two: I bring the third torn page to Arc 1 myself, in my own hand, on my own train. I want to feel the paper land.
In three days Yu-jin will tell me what the marble pillar saw. I walked past it like furniture.
