Making the Invisible Witness

I felt steadier once the inspection record reached the bidder networks. Not calmer exactly—steadier. There is a difference. Calm is what I showed Han Jisu and Baek; steadiness was the thing underneath, solid enough to hold when every answer became another opening for someone to attack.

I wanted the questions. I wanted collectors and salvage people to study the proof until Baek’s version looked thinner by comparison. It is a petty kind of satisfaction, ranking everyone’s reaction and watching the account fall apart, but I am done apologizing for knowing how to make evidence travel.

The hardest part was choosing visibility. A hidden sale would have been safer for me. A public one leaves fingerprints around every claim, every buyer, every person who decides I have crossed some forbidden line. I called the Maru by its name because silence had started to feel like letting him choose the story. I do not want him owning even the shape of my silence.

On the train, sadness arrived after the adrenaline did. I ate because forcing myself to chew felt more useful than admitting I was frightened that I had bet too much on one authenticated copy. My family would call this reckless. They might be right. They also might be terrified for me, which is harder for me to dismiss.

Grandfather’s gold still waits somewhere I cannot reach. Tonight I wondered whether I am searching for it, or trying to prove that the life I chose can still return something no one dismissed.
